How to Clean Clear Retainers: Daily Care

How to clean a clear removable retainer
These steps are for removable retainers. A bonded wire stays in the mouth and needs a different cleaning routine. Follow any specific instructions supplied with your appliance.
Rinse after taking it out. Wash your hands, then rinse the retainer with cool or lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, which can change its shape.
Brush or use an ultrasonic cleaner. Gently clean the inside and outside with a soft brush, or use an ultrasonic retainer cleaner with compatible retainer-cleaning tablets. Follow your retainer’s care instructions and the directions for the machine and tablets.
Rinse well and check it. Rinse away the cleaning product completely. Look for deposits, cracks or rough edges. Cleaning cannot fix damage or a change in fit.
Clean your teeth and the case. Brush and floss before putting the retainer back in. Clean and dry the case regularly, and follow the storage instructions for your retainer when you are not wearing it.
Plaque, white buildup or a lingering smell?
A soft film and a hard deposit need different approaches. If normal cleaning is not working, ask the office before using a stronger solution.
Soft film or food residue. Gentle daily cleaning and rinsing help remove surface debris. When using a brush, pay attention to the grooves without scrubbing hard.
Hard white deposits or crust. Mineral buildup can be difficult to remove at home. Do not scrape it off with sharp tools. Ask the team to check the retainer and recommend a suitable cleaning or replacement option.
Odor, staining or irritation that persists. Clean the case too. If the problem continues, or your gums are sore, arrange a review. A stronger soak will not solve every cause.
Choose the product for the retainer
Care instructions vary by material and manufacturer. Keep the instructions that came with your retainer, and ask the office if you are unsure.
Can I use toothpaste?
Avoid abrasive or whitening toothpaste on clear plastic. Some manufacturers allow a specific non-abrasive toothpaste; use it only if it matches your retainer’s instructions. Continue using fluoride toothpaste on your teeth.
How do I use an ultrasonic cleaner with tablets?
Choose a machine and tablets suitable for your retainer’s material, and check that the machine allows the tablets you plan to use. Follow the instructions for water temperature, tablet quantity and cleaning time, then rinse the retainer thoroughly.
Where can I buy retainer-cleaning supplies?
Look for ultrasonic retainer cleaners and retainer-cleaning tablets at Target, Amazon or other retailers. Check the product’s compatibility with your retainer before buying. If you are unsure, ask our team.
Should I try vinegar, peroxide or mouthwash?
Do not improvise mixtures or soaking times. Ask which products are appropriate for your retainer. Never use household bleach, boiling water or a dishwasher to clean it.
Make care easier away from home
Pack your case, a soft brush and your approved cleaner. Put your retainer in the case instead of a napkin or a pocket. Keep it away from pets, hot cars and direct heat. If it becomes damaged or painful to wear, contact the office.

How do I get plaque off my retainer?
Start with the daily gentle-cleaning routine above. If a deposit stays hard or does not come off with routine cleaning, do not scrape or increase the chemical strength. Ask the orthodontic team to inspect it.
Can cleaning make a tight retainer fit again?
Cleaning removes buildup; it does not reverse warping or tooth movement. If the retainer does not seat properly or causes pain, do not force it. Arrange a fit assessment.
Can I use my clear retainer as a whitening tray?
Ask your dentist or orthodontist before adding whitening gel. A retainer is made for retention; whitening products and trays need their own instructions.
